Treasure Island
by Robert Louis Stevenson, illustrated by Rowland Hilder
London: Humphrey Milford | Oxford University Press, [reprint] 1936
This classic adventure story of pirates, the high seas and black spots by Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-94) was originally serialised in the magazine ‘Young Folks’ (1881-2), then published in book form by Cassell (1883). The illustrated edition by Rowland Hilder (1905-93) was first published by Oxford in 1929, this copy being a later reprint.
Hardback. Publisher’s blue cloth with titles and rules in gilt to spine and front board; illustrated to spine and front board in cream and black; gilt to top edge of page-block; textured endpapers to match dustwrapper. In a buff/light brown dustwrapper and matching slipcase. pp [2] blank, [i]-xi, [xii] blank, [1]-260, [2] blank, including b/w illustrations and twelve tipped-in colour plates, plus map. Size: 9.25 x 6.75 inches approx. (236mm x 168mm).
Slipcase grubby/dusty and a little marked and stained; bumped and worn to head of opening; overall, showing shelfwear but still very sturdy. Light wear to dustwrapper; some creasing to head of spine; age-toned and some dustiness or mark; flaps appear roughly trimmed however offsetting to endpapers show perhaps original. Cloth clean and bright; spine ends a little turned-in; light shelfwear to extremities. Offsetting and toning to endpapers, prize label to front paste-down; sporadic foxing throughout, heavy in places and especially to preliminaries and last few pages, but generally clean and bright; spotting to fore-edge and bottom edge of page-block, gilt very bright to top edge.
Overall, showing some wear but otherwise a nicely preserved copy – really quite lovely indeed.
