Braddon’s debut novel originally published 1860 in twenty-seven weekly parts by C. R. Empson under the title ‘Three Times Dead’. Subsequently revised and published 1861 by Ward & Lock under the title ‘The Trail of the Serpent’, with reprints from various publishers since then. This copy a later reprint circa 1904 (dated from the list of her previous works).

Hardback – publisher’s decorated cloth with gilt titles to spine and front board; page-block with top edge gilt. pp [2], 320, [1] colophon. 7.75 x 5.25 inches approx. (195mm x 133mm).

Cloth marked and stained in places; rubbed and worn to extremities; spine ends and corner tips turned-in. Pages dusty and marked in places, some occasional foxing, but generally clean; previous owner inscription in ink to half-title page; dusty and marked to edges of page-block; some corner creasing.

Overall, showing some wear but remains a reasonably nice copy – uncommon.
