The Saint of the Speedway
Ridgwell Cullum
London: The Readers Library Publishing Company Ltd, [1929]*
The Readers Library published affordable editions of popular fiction in the period 1924-35, cheaply produced but very attractive with their wrap-round dustwrapper artwork.
An adventure story from British author Ridgwell Cullum, the pseudonym of Sidney Groves Burghard (1867-1943), and originally published by Cecil Palmer in 1924. Ridgwell Cullum was a popular author for Readers Library, this being their fifth title at time of publication.
Hardback in dustwrapper. pp 252, [1] advert. Size: 6.75 x 4.25 inches approx. (170mm x 110mm).
Dustwrapper a little rubbed and worn with small loss to corner tips and spine ends; a little grubby and marked; some spotting/foxing, especially to flaps. Light shelf wear to boards and spine; knocked to upper corner of boards; gilt to spine dulled. Page-block very tightly bound, wrinkled and cockled to endpapers and some pulling to gutter after title page; a previous owner’s name and address in ink to front free endpaper; pages age-toned but otherwise generally clean throughout.
Overall, showing some wear but otherwise a nice, clean copy – attractive.
