The Rubáiyát of a Bachelor
by Helen Rowland, decorations by Harold Speakman
London : Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co. Ltd, [1925]
A parody of Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám and a humourous take on bachelorhood and marriage by the journalist and humourist Helen Rowland (1875-1950), nicely illustrated throughout with page decorations and line drawings by Harold Speakman (1888-1928).
Originally published in the United States by Dodge Publishing Company (1915), this copy being the United Kingdom edition from London publishers Simpkin, Marshall, &c. Seemingly identical to the US edition barring the London imprint to title page and the addition of ‘Printed in the United States of America’ statement to title page verso, the British Library dates this edition as 1925.
Hardback – publisher’s red cloth with onlay title label to front board. pp [1]-90, [1], including b/w illustrations plus b/w frontispiece, illustrated endpapers. Size: 7.75 x 5.5 inches approx. (195mm x 141mm).
Covers lightly worn and rubbed to extremities; cloth a little marked to rear board but generally clean; label to front board a little grubby and marked. Endpapers foxed and with heavy offsetting; pages age-toned and a touch dusty in places but generaly clean throughout; edges of page-block dusty and spotted.
Overall, showing some wear but otherwise a nice, clean copy – attractive.
