The Phantom Ship by Karl Spindler (The London Book Co. Ltd, [1929]) The Novel Library
The Phantom Ship
by Karl Spindler, translated by W. Montgomery and E. H. McGrath
The London Book Co. Ltd, [1929]*
A volume in the ‘Novel Library’ series, similiar in style and competing with ‘The Reader’s Library’ with their attractive wrap-round dustwrappers.
This title with no series number indicated† but later titles often had a number on the dustwrapper; this copy with a pencilled ‘No. 128’ to front endpaper which may indicate a previous owner has discovered its place in the series.
Hardback. Publisher’s red cloth with gilt titles and decoration to spine and front board. In a dustwrapper. pp vi, 241, [1] colophon. Size: 6.25 x 4 inches approx. (157mm x 111mm).
Dustwrapper lightly rubbed and worn to extremities; a few short edges tears with pasted paper repairs to verso; small patch of surface loss to rear panel; age-toned and spotted, sunned to spine; offseting and toned to verso. Light shelf wear to boards and spine; a little grubbiness to boards in places and dulled to spine. Endpapers age-toned and with offsetting, a previous owner inscription in ink to front free endpaper; pages tanned, especially to margins, a touch dusty in places but generally clean throughout.
Overall, showing some light wear but otherwise a nicely preserved copy – lovely in its dustwrapper.
