The Old Man and the Sea
by Ernest Hemingway, illustrated by C. F. Tunnicliffe and Raymond Sheppard
The Reprint Society, 1st illustrated edition 1953
This title first published in the US by Scribners in 1952, the UK edition being published the same year by Jonathan Cape. The illustrated edition published by The Reprint Society in 1953 unusually pre-dated Cape’s illustrated version of the same by two years (1955).
Hardback – publisher’s cloth with title to spine and decoration to front board, illustrated endpapers, top edge of page-block tinted red (now faded to pink), in a dustwrapper. 117pp including b/w illustrations. Size: 8.75 x 6.25 inches approx. (221mm x 155mm).
Dustwrapper rubbed and worn, especially to spine ends and corner tips with short tears and small loss; spine sunned and darkened; some foxing/spotting to spine and flap folds; dusty and marked. Cloth clean and bright; light shelf wear to extremities. Light foxing/spotting to endpapers, name in ink to front paste-down and pencilled name to front free endpaper; the occasional foxing, stain or handling mark/crease but generally pages clean throughout.
Overall, showing some wear to dustwrapper but remains a reasonably nice, clean copy.
