The Old Man and the Sea
by Ernest Hemingway, illustrated by C. F. Tunnicliffe and Raymond Sheppard
The Reprint Society, 1st illustrated edition 1953
This title first published in the US by Scribners in 1952, the UK edition being published the same year by Jonathan Cape. The illustrated edition published by The Reprint Society in 1953 unusually pre-dated Cape’s illustrated version of the same by two years (1955).
Hardback – publisher’s cloth with title to spine and decoration to front board, illustrated endpapers, top edge of page-block tinted red, in a price-clipped dustwrapper. 117pp including b/w illustrations. Size: 8.75 x 6.25 inches approx. (221mm x 157mm).
Dustwrapper a little rubbed and worn, especially to head of spine; dusty and marked, some foxing/spotting but mainly to front panel; spine sunned and darkened; untidily price-clipped; spotted and age-toned to verso. Cloth a little dusty and darkened in places; light wear to spine ends and corner tips. Some offsetting and foxing to endpapers; signs of a pencilled note erased to front free endpaper, some light abrasion to the surface at the upper corner; occasional foxing or dustiness, some age toning, but generally pages clean throughout; spotting and darkened to edges of page-block.
Overall, showing some wear but otherwise remaining a nice, clean copy in presentable condition.
