The First Year
London: The Readers Library Publishing Company Ltd, *
The Readers Library published affordable editions of popular fiction in the period 1924-35, cheaply produced but very attractive with their wrap-round dustwrapper artwork.
A comedy of married life and adapted from the play written by Frank Craven.
Ruth Alexander (1879-1958)† was the author of many play adaptations and early film novelisations including Arnold Ridley’s “Ghost Train” and Charles Bennett’s “Blackmail” and “The Man Who Knew Too Much”.
Hardback in dustwrapper. 252pp. Size: 6.75 x 4.25 inches approx. (169mm x 106mm).
Some wear and rubbing to dustwrapper with minor loss to extremities and surface abrasions; some scratching/light gouging to front panel with a couple of punctures; fingernail size puncture to lower spine; foxing/spotting to verso; dusty. Light shelfwear to boards and spine, with some spotting/loss of colour to edges; a couple of dents/gouging to front board, one of which has broken in to the board; gilt to spine dulled. Offsetting to endpapers and pages age toned but generally clean throughout; retailer’s label (Timothy White of St. Austell) to front paste-down; page-block tight.
Overall, showing some wear but remains a nice, clean copy – attractive with its dustwrapper.
