The Centenary Poe
Tales, Poems, Criticism, Marginalia and Eureka by Edgar Allan Poe
edited and with an introduction by Montagu Slater
Theodore Brun Limited in conjunction with The Bodley Head, 1st edition 1949
A numbered limited edition (400 copies + 3 presentation copies) in a full leather binding and signed by the editor Montagu Slater. This copy being number 56 and originally available to members of The Collector’s Book Club (copies 1-120).
A striking looking binding with a raven to front board.
Hardback – full leather binding with title in gilt to spine, gilt decoration to spine and front board, marbled effect decorative endpapers, top edge gilt, and a sewn-in ribbon page marker. Housed in a custom-made slipcase with black buckram to top and bottom, and black paper sides. pp [4] additional half-title and limitation pages, [1]-559. Size: 8.5 x 5.5 inches approx. (221mm x 141mm).
Leather just a touch marked and scuffed in places, mainly evident to corner tips and upper spine near head. Front endpaper split at the gutter but hinge holding firm; offsetting to margins of preliminaries and final pages (mirroring the leather folded over on paste-down); pages age-toned, a touch dusty and handled in places but generally clean throughout; gilt to top edge of page-block dusty and a little scratched.
Nonetheless, a nice, clean copy – presents well with its custom slipcase.
