Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (T. N. Foulis, ) illustrated by Gilbert James Envelope Book Leather Binding
Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám
translation by Edward Fitzgerald, illustrated by Gilbert James
T. N. Foulis, *
The first title in the series of ‘Envelope Books’ from the publishers T. N. Foulis, this copy being a first issue with three titles listed at the rear of the book. Subsequent issues, also undated, had an increasing number of titles listed as available.
Nicely re-bound in full leather, re-stitched and some pages with hinge guards. Complete, however for reasons unknown, the binder has inserted the half-title page and frontispiece between verses XX and XXI.
Hardback – full leather binding with gilt title to spine and front board, sewn-in ribbon pagemarker, housed in a buckram covered flexible slipcase. pp [not numbered], five tipped-in colour plates. Size: 7.25 x 3.75 inches approx. (185mm x 95mm).
Occasional foxing and dustiness throughout, some offsetting (see half-title), but generally pages reasonably clean. Perhaps a little tightly bound but perfectly readable.
Overall, an attractive presentation – lovely.
