Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (Hodder and Stoughton, 1919) illustrated by Edmund Dulac Twenty Plates Red Cloth with Dustwrapper
Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám
rendered into English Verse by Edward Fitzgerald
with illustrations by Edmund Dulac
Hodder and Stoughton, [November, 1919]*
The first Dulac illustrated ‘Rubáiyát’ was first published in 1909 as a signed and limited edition in a vellum binding, and as a trade edition in a white buckram binding. This copy a later printing in red cloth with the same gilt design but with plain endpapers and the text borders in pale green, otherwise seemingly identical to the first edition.
Twenty tipped-in colour plates.
Hardback. Publisher’s red cloth with titles and decoration in gilt to spine and front board. In a dustwrapper with onlay plate to front panel. [162]pp including colour plates. Size: 11.25 x 9 inches approx. (284mm x 221mm).
Dustwrapper somewhat rubbed and worn; tears to spine ends and folds with wear, creasing and some loss; larger loss to tail of spine; dusty/grubby especially to spine; marked and stained. Cloth to spine and boards very clean and bright (just a patch of dullness to tail of spine and a small patch of faint dampness to rear board, each mirroring dustwrapper issues); spine ends a little crushed and light shelf wear to extremities. Lacking front free endpaper (neat stub remaining); offsetting/age-toned to half-title page, also heavily stained and rubbed to upper corner where it appears an attempt has been made to remove an inked inscription; some age-toning/offsetting to rear endpaper and last page; age-toned and occasional grubby mark but generally plates/guards and text pages very clean and bright throughout; smoky/nicotine odour.
Overall, some wear and faults but otherwise a bright, clean copy – and uncommon to find with its, albeit worn, dustwrapper.
