Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (Dodge Publishing, circa 1920s) Popular Edition in Box illustrated by Adelaide Hanscom
Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám
as translated into English Verse by Edward Fitzgerald
with illustrations by Adelaide Hanscom
Dodge Publishing Company, Popular Edition (copyright 1914) circa 1920s
Potter* dates this edition as 1927 however the contemporary inscription in this copy would suggest that is incorrect. The twenty-eight colour plate Adelaide Hanscom/Blanche Cumming edition from Dodge was published 1912; the eight colour plate ‘popular edition’ was likely in print from 1914 onwards. This copy presented in a box presumably for the Christmas gift market.
Card covers with dustwrapper, in box. 110pp plus 8 colour plates. 6.25 x 5 inches approx. (160mm x 125mm).
Box worn, marked and grubby, split joints to lid. Dustwrapper attached to spine (presumably as intended), a little spotting to front panel; offsetting to endpapers; inscription to front endpaper (usefully dated); age tanning to pages otherwise clean.
Overall, a quite lovely, attractive copy nicely protected in its somewhat worn box.
