Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám
translated by Edward Fitzgerald
edited, with introduction and notes by Reynold Alleyne Nicholson
A. & C. Black Ltd, reprint 1946
This Nicholson* edition was originally published in 1909 with sixteen colour plates by Gilbert James, this copy being a later reprint issued with a reduced complement of eight colour plates.
Hardback – publisher’s cloth with title and decoration to spine and front board, in a dustwrapper. pp viii, 136, including decorations in the text plus eight colour plates. 7.5 x 5 inches approx. (188mm x 129mm).
War-time economy/repurposing of the dustwrapper for ‘The Sea Monarch’ by [Percy F.] Westerman, with this title printed to verso.
Dustwrapper rubbed and worn, especially to spine ends, corner tips and folds with small loss; discoloured scuff to spine; a little dusty, marked and grubby but generally remaining bright. Lightly knocked to spine ends; black decoration rubbed to front board, otherwise cloth clean and bright. Endpapers foxed and with offsetting, some bubbling to front paste-down; occasional foxing or dustiness but generally pages very clean throughout; a few pages with production creasing/wrinkles.
Overall, showing some light wear but otherwise a particularly nice, clean copy – attractive.
