Richard Cosway by George C Williamson (George Bell, 1905) Decorative Cover by GMW
Richard Cosway R.A.
George C. Williamson
George Bell and Sons, 1905
Revised and re-written study of the portrait miniaturist Richard Cosway of a work first published in 1896.
Lovely decorative binding designed by ‘G.M.W.’ incorporating a Cosway miniature.
Richard Cosway, long after his death, was the inspiration for the ‘Cosway Binding’ that utilised a finely painted miniature inlaid into a fine leather binding.
Hardback – publisher’s cloth with gilt and silver decoration, page-block with top edge gilt. pp. xiii, [1], 147, plus b/w plates. 9 x 6.5 inches approx. (230mm x 165mm).
Binding showing only light rubbing to extremities; offsetting to endpapers; spotting to page edges; pages dusty and with occasional foxing throughout but generally clean; several pages slightly kinked to upper corner; open gutter between two page gatherings exposing spine backstrip but otherwise page block remains tight either side of the break.
Overall, light wear but otherwise in nice, clean condition – a very attractive copy.
