Originally published in 1906, this copy one in a series of facsimile reprints of Hodder & Stoughton gift books which were re-published in the late 1970s to mid 1980s. Other titles include “Sleeping Beauty”, “Peter Pan and Wendy”, “Hans Andersen’s Fairy Tales”, “The Water Babies”, &c.
Fifty tipped-in colour plates by Arthur Rackham.
Hardback – full leather binding with titles and decoration in gilt to spine and front board, pages all edges gilt, silk endpapers and ribbon bookmark, housed in a custom slipcase. pp. [x], 126 including b/w illustrations plus colour plates. 10 x 7.25 inches approx. (252mm x 188mm).
Boards a touch rubbed to corner tips. Some tissue guards foxed and cockled to margins, two guards to rear of book very foxed but not affecting plates (from other examples of this title and others in the series this would appear to be a common issue); pages a touch ‘kinked’ from handling in places but otherwise clean throughout.
Overall, a lovely, attractive copy nicely presented in a custom slipcase.
