Murder on the Second Floor by Frank Vosper (Readers Library, circa 1929) with dustwrapper
Murder on the Second Floor
London: The Readers Library Publishing Company Ltd, circa 1929
The Readers Library published affordable editions of popular fiction in the period 1924-35, cheaply produced but very attractive with their wrap-round dustwrapper artwork.
The novelisation of Frank Vosper’s play and illustrated with eight pages of scenes from the production. The play originally showed in London and Broadway – “…one of the most successful London productions of the season” (dustwrapper blurb).
Hardback – gilt title and decoration to spine and front board, in a dustwrapper. 190pp plus 8pp b/w plates. Size: 6.75 x 4.25 inches approx. (169mm x 108mm).
Dustwrapper worn and rubbed; short tears to folds with small loss; spotted and stained to upper and lower edges of flaps; foxed and spotted though mainly only visible to verso. Covers showing some shelf wear; knocked and worn to foot of spine; gilt dulled. Heavy foxing to endpapers and last page; pages age-toned and occasional foxing but generally clean; edges of page-block spotted with some encroachment into margins.
Overall, showing some wear but otherwise a reasonably nice, clean copy – presents well in its dustwrapper.
