Modern Design in Embroidery
by Rebecca Crompton, edited by Davide C. Minter
B. T. Batsford Ltd, 1st edition October 1936
Detailed study and a standard work by the innovative embroidery designer Rebecca Crompton (1895-1947)*. Well illustrated throughout the text, plus a colour frontispiece and fifty-one plates (48 b/w and 3 colour).
Hardback – publisher’s cloth with title to spine and front board, in a dustwrapper. pp viii, 72, including b/w illustrations plus b/w and colour plates. 10 x 6.25 inches approx. (252mm x 158mm).
Dustwrapper art by Rebecca Crompton.
An exhibition catalogue (location and date unknown) of Rebecca Crompton’s work with prices is loosely inserted. A duplicated type-written sheet with text both sides. Size: 13 x 8.25 inches approx. (329mm x 210mm). Folded twice, some creasing and wear, spotted and foxed.
Dustwrapper rubbed and worn; tatty and torn to top edge with small loss; spotted; grubby and marked; indentations to front panel and some blue biro ‘colouring-in’. Boards and spine clean and bright, a bit dusty towards the edges; a touch knocked to spine ends and corners. Some age toning to pages but generally clean throughout; spotting to edges of page-block with some occasional encroachment into margins; lightly bumped to upper corner of page-block; cockling to upper margin of the plate pages (a different paper stock to text pages) – no dampness, more like poor long-term storage with exposure to cold and damp air.
Nonetheless, remaining a reasonably nice, clean copy – uncommon.
