Historic Haunts of England by Gwen Woodcock (Alexander Maclehose, 1938)
Historic Haunts of England
Gwen Woodcock
Alexander Maclehose & Co., 1st edition 1938
A guide with some potted history for the interested traveller of over fifty historic buildings in England. A companion volume to the publisher’s ‘Historic Haunts of Scotland’ and ‘England Under Trust’.
The dustwrapper has two A. & C. Black price labels to spine and front flap with a revised, and higher, price of eight shillings and sixpence; the original price being 7/6. My understanding is A. & C. Black took on several of Maclehose’s titles* in the late 1930s.
Hardback. Publisher’s green cloth with title in blue to spine and front board. In a buff coloured dustwrapper with titles and illustration in blue to spine and front panel; list of Maclehose titles to rear panel. pp xiii, 368, [2] publisher list, including b/w plates. Size: 8.5 x 6 inches approx. (213mm x 155mm).
Dustwrapper worn and rubbed, especially to spine ends and corner tips with some loss; a little grubby and marked. Cloth clean and bright. An inscription in ink to front free endpaper; pages lightly age tanned but otherwise generally clean throughout; edges of page-block a touch dusty and marked.
Overall, showing some light wear but otherwise a nice, clean copy – nice to find with a dustwrapper.
