His Lady (Manon Lescaut) by The Abbe Prevost (Readers Library, circa 1928) John Barrymore
His Lady (Manon Lescaut)
by The Abbé Prévost
London: The Readers Library Publishing Company Ltd, circa 1928*
The Readers Library published affordable editions of popular fiction in the period 1924-35, cheaply produced but very attractive with their wrap-round dustwrapper artwork.
A film tie-in dustwrapper to coincide with the Warner Brothers 1927 film “His Lady” (US title “When a Man Loves”), directed by Alan Crosland and starring John Barrymore and Dolores Costello. Interestingly, the Editor’s Note ties the book to a previous film release, this being the 1926 German production titled “Manon Lescaut” (UK title “His Lady”) directed by Athur Robison and starring Lya De Putti.
Hardback in dustwrapper. 250pp. Size: 6.75 x 4.25 inches approx. (169mm x 105mm).
Dustwrapper a little rubbed and worn to spine ends and corner tips. Light shelf wear to spine and boards, a little marked to rear board; gilt dulled to spine. Bubbling to paste-downs with some resultant impressions to free endpapers and following pages; some age toning but generally pages clean thoughout.
Overall, light wear but otherwise a nice, clean copy – lovely.
