Hindle Wakes
by Harold Brighouse, based on the play by Stanley Houghton
London: The Readers Library Publishing Company Ltd, 1st edition [1927]
The Readers Library published affordable editions of popular fiction in the period 1924-35, cheaply produced but very attractive with their wrap-round dustwrapper artwork.
A novelisation written for The Readers Library by Harold Brighouse (Hobson’s Choice) and based on the Stanley Houghton play (Sidgwick & Jackson, 1912) of two lovers in the fictional Lancashire town of Hindle.
Hardback in dustwrapper. 252pp. Size: 6.75 x 4.25 inches approx. (169mm x 106mm).
Light wear and rubbing to dustwrapper with minor loss to corner tips; a few short edge tears and creasing to bottom edge of rear panel; nibble to bottom edge of front panel; light moisture marking to verso from boards. Boards a little marked and faded to lower corners from moisture; gilt to spine a little dulled. Pages age-toned throughout but generally very clean.
Overall, showing some light wear but otherwise a particularly nice, clean copy – very attractive.
