Grimm’s Fairy Tales (Hodder & Stoughton, circa 1914) illustrated by Noel Pocock
Grimm’s Fairy Tales
New York: Hodder & Stoughton [No Date] circa 1914*
Nicely illustrated with twenty-three colour plates by Noel Pocock.
Originally published in 1913 (New York: H&S and London: Henry Frowde/H&S) in red cloth with cover design in gilt to spine and front board. This copy likely a second edition or reprint in a pale blue/grey cloth with a less ornate cover design. Confusingly, this title was also published (undated but otherwise seemingly identical to the 1913 edition in red gilt cloth) by Humphrey Milford/Oxford University Press, with reprints in varying cloth styles into the 1930s.
Hardback – publisher’s cloth with title in gilt to spine and front board, stamped illustration in black to front, illustrated endpapers. pp [iii]-viii, 346, [2], plus 23 colour plates. Size: 9.25 x 6.75 inches approx. (236mm x 170mm).
Cloth with light wear and rubbing to extremities; some discolouration and fading, especially to rear board. Splitting to inner hinges especially to front; rear endpaper with short tear to fore-edge; some mottling to endpapers though mostly to rear, no dampness evident but definitely colour loss; **LACKING HALF-TITLE PAGE**; note pasted to verso of frontispiece; pages dusty with occasional mark and edge tear, some corner creasing, but generally clean; short edge tear to fore-edge of last few pages; edges of page-block dusty and spotted.
Nonetheless, remaining an attractive copy.
