London: B. T. Batsford Ltd, 1st edition Autumn 1945
Sent by the Ministry of Information during wartime to India and China, this is Cecil Beaton’s own account and photographs of his travels and the people he met.
This title following on from the earlier published ‘Near East’ (1943), with yet more photographs from these travels published as ‘Indian Album’ and ‘Chinese Album’ (1945).
An attractive wrap-round dustwrapper design in pale pink, artist/designer not credited.
Hardback. Publisher’s orange cloth with titles in yellow to spine and front board; page-block stained red to top edge. In a dustwrapper priced 15 shilling to front flap. pp vi, 111, including b/w line drawings, plus b/w plates and a colour frontispiece. Size: 9 x 6 inches approx. (228mm x 153mm).
Dustwrapper rubbed and worn to folds; wear and small loss to spine ends and corner tips; top edge creased and worn with short tears and small loss, a little frayed and delicate; a small patch (4mm x 4mm) of surface loss to front panel; slightly toned and faded to spine. Cloth clean and bright; light wear to spine ends and corner tips. Pages a little age toned but generally very clean throughout.
Overall, showing some light wear but otherwise a nicely preserved copy – very attractive in its dustwrapper.
