Cranford by Mrs Gaskell (Harrap, 1948) illustrated by Joan Hassall Quarter Leather Binding
Cranford
Mrs [Elizabeth] Gaskell
George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd, reprint 1948
Illustrated with wood engravings by Joan Hassall, this edition originally published by Harrap in 1940.
Hardback – quarter leather with cloth over boards, title in gilt to spine with gilt rules to spine ends, page-block with top-edge-gilt, printed floral endpapers. 256pp including b/w illustrations. 8.75 x 5.75 inches approx. (222mm x 143mm).
Note: usually seen in publisher’s cloth with dustwrapper, this copy probably a special or de-luxe edition by the publisher – other copies seen or noted in the same quarter leather binding (with different leather/cloth colour) and the floral endpapers.
Spine a little discoloured/sunned to spine; leather a little rubbed to spine head; cloth rubbed and worn to extremities, a litle marked in places. Page-block foxed/spotted to edges; occasional foxing to pages but generally clean throughout.
Overall, a nice, tight copy – attractive.
