All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque (Putnam, circa 1948) with dustwrapper
All Quiet on the Western Front
Erich Maria Remarque
London: Putnam, reprinted twenty-three times completing 389,000 copies
Circa 1948* printing of the hugely successful Great War novel. The dustwrapper on this copy with artwork by an unidentified artist; this differs to the plain green dustwrapper design of the earlier printings and the battlefield and soldier artwork of the ‘Cheap’ edition.
Hardback – green cloth with gilt title to spine, in dustwrapper. 320pp. Size: 7.5 x 5 inches approx. (190mm x 127mm).
Dustwrapper rubbed and worn; small loss to spine ends and corner tips; somewhat grubby and dusty; foxed/spotted, mainly visible to rear panel and verso. Light shelf wear to boards and spine; cloth clean but gilt dulled to spine. Endpapers tanned and foxed; some foxing to first few pages but otherwise generally clean throughout; spotting and dustiness to edges of page-block with some encroachment on to page margins.
Nonetheless, remaining a reasonably nice copy – and uncommon to find with this dustwrapper design.

*Dated from the list of author’s previous works; ‘Arch of Triumph’ first English translation being published in 1945; the dustwrapper blurb to rear flap – “The author’s thoughts have now an interest and signifance for those who have endured a second world war”; and a bookseller’s pencilled code to rear paste-down – 7223/6/48 – where 1948 might be inferred?
