Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

Lewis Carroll
illustrated by Bessie Pease [Gutmann]
George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd., reprint March 1929

American artist and illustrator Bessie Pease Gutmann first illustrated ‘Alice’ in 1907 for Dodge Publishing of New York, the UK edition following in 1908 published by John Milne. This George Harrap edition was first published in April 1920, priced at six shillings, with a further reprint in 1925. This copy reprinted March 1929 and described on the dustwrapper as the ‘Pease’ edition and being part of ‘Harrap’s Standard Children’s Library’, was priced at three shillings and sixpence.

Hardback in dustwrapper. [10] + 164 + [2]pp including b/w illustrations plus eight colour plates. 8 x 5.75 inches approx. (201mm x 148mm).

Dustwrapper showing some light wear to upper and lower edges; foxing to spine; small area of dampstain to upper corner of rear panel (above Harrap’s) but hardly visible. Boards extremely bright and clean with just slight speckling to spine and light signs of dampstain to upper corner of rear board; front endpaper creased; occasional foxing throughout and with spotting to edges but generally pages very clean.

Overall, a particularly lovely, clean copy in the uncommon dustwrapper. Lovely indeed, it would be hard to find a better example.
