Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll (Boots, [1932]) illustrated by Gwynedd M. Hudson
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
Lewis Carroll
Hodder and Stoughton for Boots Pure Drug Co. Ltd., [1932] Centenery Edition
Superbly illustrated throughout in colour by Gwynedd M. Hudson (fl. 1910-1935)†.
The Hudson illustrated edition of Alice in Wonderland originally published by Hodder and Stoughton in 1922*, the Boots versions following in 1928 (blue cloth with a tan dustwrapper) and 1932 (red cloth with a red dustwrapper).
Hardback – publisher’s red cloth with gilt title to spine and gilt title and decoration to front board, in a dustwrapper with onlay plate to front panel. pp [10], 181, two-tone illustrations on the endpapers and in the text, plus twelve tipped-in colour plates with titled guards. 10 x 8 inches approx. (255mm x 200mm).
Dustwrapper rubbed, worn and torn with small loss; faded and stained to spine; onlay plate rubbed to edges and small patch of loss to upper margin; folds stretched and worn; a little grubby. Cloth faded and marked in places, otherwise generally clean and still with some original sheen to it; some wrinkling to rear board; spine ends worn and turned-in; light wear to board corner tips. Endpapers tanned and with offsetting, paste-downs very spotted; pencilled ownership inscription; pages dusty and tanned throughout, some occasional foxing or mark but the plates remain clean and bright; page-block bumped to corners, notably upper corner; some pages and tissue guards a little creased and dog-eared to corners; occasional pencil mark or scribble, some erasing to lower margin of page 143; a few instances of neat and light colouring of the two-tone and guard-page illustrations – not immediately apparent and hardly noticeable; edges of page-block dusty and a little grubby, some spotting.
Nonetheless, showing wear but actually quite nice and not a bad copy at all – remaining attractive with its clean, bright plates and always nice to find with dustwrapper.
